Getting Unstuck: Designing Your Personal Innovation Pivot

In the vortex of today’s rapid pace of change, a leader that’s standing still is essentially a leader that’s moving backward. The challenge isn’t simply to keep up; it’s to get unstuck and design a personal innovation pivot that prepares you and your organization for what’s next.
As I’ve often shared, “I’ve always believed in the power of pivoting—not drifting.” Drifting happens when we hold on to outdated practices, waiting for clarity that never arrives. Pivoting, on the other hand, is intentional. It’s about choosing to change direction based on insight, self-awareness, and courage. I know this first-hand.
My Challenging Experience
During my tenure as a senior executive at a Fortune 500 corporation, I was faced with a critical decision when a game-changing technological advancement threatened our market position. My team and I had to navigate innovation, disruption, and the prospect of declining competitiveness. The greatest challenge came from vocal colleagues who underestimated the potential impact of the disruption and weren’t responsible for making the hard decisions.
The truth is I was playing catch up in the technology space. And, I almost was caught flat-footed as a leader because I was relying on successful strategies from the past.
Had I stuck with customary decision-making paradigms, I would have dismissed the disruption as temporary, unproven, or of lesser importance. I realized, however, the need to pivot, not just reactively, but with intention and leadership agility.
That moment required a rapid response that included:
- Assembling technical and market insights from experts outside of the organization
- Learning about the capabilities of the technical disruption
- Anticipating and assessing risks and rewards using an entirely different lens
That moment also, as it turned out, reshaped my understanding of leadership when faced with sudden change and innovation. As I often remind myself, reflecting on that time, “Staying still in a world of constant motion is the same as being stuck, and it quickly leads to falling behind.”
It’s a lesson I’ve carried into every undertaking since.
Why Leaders Get Stuck
Throughout my career, I’ve seen leaders become trapped by their past successes. The lesson is clear. If leaders aren’t introspective and willing to embrace new norms, their past successes can inhibit forward momentum, and they put their organizations at risk of stagnation. (The same is true of leaders that don’t face challenges head on fully or commit to taking bold, decisive action.)
Serving on the board of a nonprofit, I witnessed how adherence to outdated fundraising models created a disconnect with new donor expectations. It was a classic case of past success bias.
At Pivot Global Partners, we often see how senior executives can remain anchored by established strategies. Their fear of the unknown and unfamiliar is palpable. Yet, it is precisely these moments that offer the greatest opportunities for leadership growth and reinvention. Through candid discussions and thoughtful guidance, we’ve helped these leaders and their organizations embrace necessary change.
The Personal Innovation Pivot
My leadership philosophy is anchored in our trademarked Crossing Meridians® approach, which equips leaders to turn their potential stumbling blocks into stepping-stones. It’s best explained in my critically-acclaimed book, Crossing Meridians: Engineering Disruption to Become a More Effective Leader.
Whether leading a team to incubate and deploy innovation, coaching a team through making a significant market shift, or repositioning the workforce to meet changing demands, success begins and ends with the individual leader that commits to leadership pivoting using these essential elements:
- Self-awareness: Leaders that identify and leverage their strengths while confronting blind spots make the most meaningful personal leadership pivots
- Practical Action: Leaders that transform insights and theory into real, doable steps are better positioned to solve new challenges
- Courageous Adaptation: Leaders that foster a culture of innovation, starting with themselves, embrace future challenges with resilience and a proactive mindset
Why This Matters Now
In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, I’ve seen first-hand the transformative power of embracing a leadership pivot mindset—whether you’re in a Fortune 500 company, an entrepreneurial venture, a nonprofit, or an educational institution.
Leaders equipped with this mindset thrive and turn disruption into a catalyst for personal and organizational breakthroughs. They embrace change, drive innovation, and sustain competitive advantage.
Leaders that aren’t equipped with this mindset falter. They find it difficult to reimagine their leadership or champion their organization to evolve in the face of the unfamiliar.
This isn’t just my take on why this matters now. Current leadership trends and leadership influencers mirror my vision for nimble, future-ready leaders and, likewise, call for more adaptability, learning agility, and strategic foresight.
